Buonasera

A dining room built around one long table

Orlo opened in 2019 in a former Lygon Street printworks — high ceilings, warm brick, and a twelve-metre marble bar that we still fill with regulars most nights of the week.

The cooking is Italian in technique and unapologetically Victorian in produce. Pasta is rolled each morning downstairs. Vegetables arrive three times a week from growers in the Yarra Valley and Bacchus Marsh. Fish comes up from Port Phillip and the far south coast. Nothing sits still for long.

Come for a plate of cacio e pepe at the bar with a glass of Adelaide Hills chardonnay, or settle in for four hours and let the kitchen feed you. Both are the right way to eat here.

What people say

The tagliatelle is the best plate of pasta on Lygon Street, and it isn’t especially close. We’ve been back four times this year.

Priya N. Dining guide review · March 2025

A room that gets everything right — warm without being precious, serious about wine without making a performance of it.

The Melbourne Table Four-star review · Winter 2025

We took over La Sala for my father’s seventieth. Thirty people, one long table, not a single thing I had to worry about all night.

Daniel R. Private dining · Google review

Sat at the bar alone with a book, ordered two snacks and a glass of nebbiolo from the Adelaide Hills, and left two hours later feeling looked after.
